There is much argument about the nature of the owl head found under the altar at St. Mary-by-the-Wood, Ashwick when the church was refurbished/butchered in the 1890s. Those that talk of ‘an avatar the Queen of Owls’ get disapproving looks from the current Rector. https://t.co/pp6gYB53TZ

@RRaincrow In my travels, I’ve seen many things on and in churches that no-one with an ounce of discernment could ever dismiss as anything other than nods to now lost gods, and yet, still they do. Each narrative of faith bends history, none tells it true.

@RRaincrow Some rural rectors deny to apoplexy there’s a trace of pagan in their church. Some Wiccans froth and attack if you repeat the historical truth that many of the cunning folk regarded themselves as nominally Christian. Unfortunately, the desire for comfortable narratives rules.
