The English aristocracy, living behind high walls and in stately, wood-panelled homes, would like the rest of us to believe their phantoms are dignified. All grey ladies and Sir What-the-Not. They don’t like to tell of murdered maids, trapped chimney boys. – Chris Josiffe, 1938

For Barrowcross is the grim face of Hookland. Old, stoney and harrowed by time. Its mysteries are deeper than its soil. It wears loneliness as cloak, threat as proud banner. – #CLNolan https://t.co/3mQxwfMoiT

My favourite ghost tracking the haunted borders of autumn is Tom Tranter and his travelling cider-press. Strain of heavy horse, shake of applemill on cart is heard even when no phantom is seen. His ghost cry of: ‰Û÷Cider Come! Cider joy!‰Ûª is omen of good vintage. – #CLNolan
