@JoeMeekSociety I know a fair bit. From what I have pieced together over the years I believe Joe may have first come to know about it as it was best known as an auditory haunting with pronounced footsteps and thumps.

@JoeMeekSociety It had a pronounced reputation in Essex spiritualist circles as a tortured sight and is still even to this day regarded as one of the more haunted spots of Essex.

@JoeMeekSociety The ghost of the bailiff is the one who hanged himself there. It is said that it is his heavy footsteps as he prepared to kill himself that can be heard echoing in an eternal psychic loop. However, there are also other ghosts associated with the site.

@JoeMeekSociety It is a spooky place – even today – though it was especially active back when Joe visited. Have you heard the story Lord Sutch told me about Joe trying to record the ghosts of HMP Holloway?

@JoeMeekSociety According to Lord Sutch he tried to record the ghosts in the prison‰Ûªs walls on one occasion and was moved on by the police who treated Joe with their usual hostility and incomprehension.

@JoeMeekSociety I will have to write up my old Sutch interview recording. A couple of nice memories of Joe and at a point in the 1990s when Sutch had some interesting perspectives such as his view that Joe would have excelled in the 1970s with Glam and the emergence of electronic music.

@JoeMeekSociety It is, as was standard for then, recorded on a C90. I will have to find it among all the hundreds of other interview tapes, but I looked at my shorthand notes of it a few months back and was pleased to see some of the stuff we covered such as pirate radio from Maunsel Forts et al

@JoeMeekSociety I think I caught him in a reflective mood and amplified it by talking to him about Joe, the 1972 Wembley Stadium show and parts of his career other interviewers at the time neglected.
